Strategy is the Key

If you are feeling discouraged and frustrated, I understand! Sometimes the standard approaches don’t work, because they tend to focus specifically on the area where you are feeling the discomfort. However, the source of the pain may lie elsewhere.

Imagine you are driving and you suddenly encounter a slowdown. You are concerned because there is danger here, where the brake lights in front are flashing and the cars behind are right on your tail. Soon traffic slows, and then you are sitting in your car frustrated because you are getting nowhere. You are experiencing discomfort here, but the problem that needs attention is somewhere miles up the freeway. Before anything here can return to moving normally, the rescue team needs to get to the jack-knifed truck that is blocking the traffic flow five miles up the road. It is the people above in the news helicopter who can see this clearly.

With bodies too, when there is a movement problem, it helps to have someone on the outside consider the big picture, assess your overall structure, and make a strategic plan (rather than focusing all attention on the place that is most painful). As a Structural Integrator, I can usually see not just one source of pain and strain, but multiple stuck areas that together form a more complex strain pattern.

In each session, my task is to identify what elements are not gliding and what specific tissues are short or restricted. I may ask you to experiment with small movements that will help me work to get the different parts of “the jam” unstuck. Together we are able to reduce local pain from trapped nerves or overworking muscles, so that we can restore balance within and around your joints. Your body will feel more supported, you will find you can move with less effort, and the “flow” in your systems will return to normal.

Indeed, your whole body will feel the relief. System-wide change is lasting, and has broad reaching effects, such as improved posture and coordination, improved sleep, better energy, and a lifted spirit. You will feel stronger, lighter, and steadier, and ready to return to the activities you love to do.
